Yanxia (Emily) Zhou is a Vocal Instructor, Associate Professor, Research Supervisor, and Head of Teaching and Research in the Department of Performance at the Shanghai Theatre Academy’s Department of Performance. She has also served as a Vocal Instructor of Classical Music Performance in Shanghai productions of “Jekyll and Hyde” (January 2007), “Miss Saigon” (November 2010), “Rent” (December 2011), “Guys and Dolls” (May 2012), “Sweeney Todd” (November 2012), and“Chicago” (December 2012). She served as a Vocal Instructor of Original Music Performance in“The Pop-star and the Orangutan” (Taipei, February, 2009), “Instant is not Eternity” (Shanghai, October, 2009), and “Joker’s Game” (Shanghai, July, 2011). She appeared as Madame Liu in Musical Theatre “Monk Jianzhen’s Journey to Japan” in Shanghai (September 2012), and performed as Zhao Siniang and Elder Mother Wu Rizhu in the musical “Love, Wen Ji,” held by National Arts Fund Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She has also performed in two solo concerts in Shanghai (May 2004/ April 2007).
Yanxia is a member of the China Musician Association, the Shanghai Musician Association, the Vocal Music Association of Shanghai, the International Female Artists Union, the China Institute of Neurologic Engineering, and the Archaeological and Historical Language Association. She is an Examiner of the National Artistic Grading Evaluation and a Gold Prize Winner of the Shanghai “Voice of Harmony” singing contest (April 2008). She has conducted research for the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (“Research in revolution of musical education program and development of teaching profession, ”December 2009 – September 2010), and she has published theses in Art Research (2008), Art Education (2009), Shanghai Drama (2009, 2012), Musical Education Program Research (2009), International Art Education (2014), Dramatic Arts (2018), and Voice and Speech Review (13.2, 2019). Yanxia is also the author of two books: “Interpretation of classical musical songs (Male)”, China Drama Publisher, 2009; and “Interpretation of classical musical songs (Female)”, China Drama Publisher, 2009.
Yanxia has worked in Japan with the Shiki Theatre Company, in Italy with the Piccolo Theatre, and in Denmark, where she certified in Barba and participated in the 20th Human Performance Conference. In China, she attended the voice workshop “Support Youth Art Festival,” held by the Shanghai International Arts Festival Center and Shanghai Theater Academy, as well as attending a workshop presented by the Grotowski Center at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. In the United States, Emily has earned certificates in Michael Chekhov work, Meisner performance method, and Linklater Sound Master Classes.
