Shannon Holmes is an actor, singer, educator and artistic director of SoMo Theatre, a company dedicated to the creation of interdisciplinary performance that explores the intersection of singing and speech. She holds a BFA in Theatre Performance with a Minor in Music from Concordia University, an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College in the US, and a PhD in Drama and Theatre Arts from the University of Birmingham, UK.
Her research examines how somatic methodologies used in dance and actor training may be used to bridge the divide between technique and freedom in vocal performance. As well, central in her explorations is the use of autoethnographic performance practices to examine the connections between the lived body and voice as a means of centralizing the self in the process of devising theatre.
Most recently, her self-devised solo music-theatre piece The Crook of Your Arm was presented at The Frigid Festival NYC as well as The Royal Shakespeare Company's studio stage, The Other Place in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK.
Originally from Vancouver, Shannon has lived in Montréal for the past seven years where she taught in the Theatre Department at Concordia University as well as the Professional Theatre programs at John Abbott and Dawson Colleges. She is thrilled to be starting her tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Theatre at the University of Regina in July 2020.
