RogerSmart is currently freelancing mainly in Chicago and London, England, where he recently submitted his doctoral dissertation through London University, Goldsmiths College. Roger's research for his PhD at Goldsmiths College is in the area of psycho-physical training for actors.
Roger has directed extensively in Chicago, and has taught voice, dialects, and acting at Millikin University, Oklahoma State University and at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro's. Previously he taught at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama in England.
Roger was Director of Education and Training at Court Theatre, the professional LORT theatre in residence at the University of Chicago. Here he developed and ran the theatre's Artists in Schools program, serving southside Chicago school, and developed the theatre's Apprentice Training Program. For three years he served as Artistic Director of Shattered Globe Theatre, Chicago.
Originally educated in England, he has trained in voice with Catherine Fitzmaurice, Dudley Knight, Patsy Rodenburg, and at the Roy Hart Centre in France. Roger's training and practice also includes a number of somatic disciplines including Contact Improv, Suzuki training, Viewpoints, and T'ai Chi. He is also trained in Shiatsu and Reiki.
He has been vocal, dialect, and text coach for a number of professional productions, works extensively as a free-lance director, and frequently teaches in London England.
