Jan has been in the theater most of her life. She graduated with honors from the inaugural BFA class of the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts. She then studied with Uta Hagen while simultaneously enjoying a career in regional theater and Off-Broadway. Jan has played Shakespeare’s Desdemona, Helena (The Dream) Rosalind, and Beatrice, Ibsen’s Nora and Athol Fugard’s Statements After An Arrest Under the Immorality Act in theaters that include The Manhattan Theatre Club, George Street Playhouse and Portland Stage Company. Morphing into a teaching actor, Jan was recognized ten times by the National Foundation for the Arts for her work with high school students, including the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Teacher Recognition Award. Roles continued to include Vivian Bearing in Wit, Ruth in Collected Stories and Barbara in August Osage County in such theaters as Orlando Shakespeare and The Hippodrome. With the ink on her MFA in Classical Acting barely dry, she began her career in higher education at Millikin University before moving to Kennesaw State, where she initiated the position of Voice, Text and Dialect Coach and eventually became Head of the Acting Concentration. Jan is retired from the Academy, and now freelances in Southern California. Do not get her started on her grandchildren.
